The Experience

The first thing I remember is the hush—just a few voices whispering in the dark outside our Hurghada hotel, then the soft thud of car doors. By the time we reached Luxor, my brain was foggy but waking up fast. Breakfast was simple—flatbread still warm, a little honey—and then suddenly we were in a field with the balloon crew. The burners roared to life and it felt like standing next to a dragon (honestly, I flinched). As we lifted off, dawn cracked open over the Nile. I could see green ribbons of farmland pressed against desert gold. Our pilot pointed out Karnak Temple below; it looked tiny from up there. I never thought I'd feel so calm floating above all that history.

After landing—my legs still wobbly—we met our guide, Amr. He had this way of telling stories that made the pharaohs sound like old neighbors. At Valley of the Kings, he handed us a flashlight and said “Look for blue paint—still original.” Inside one tomb, I swear you could smell stone dust and something almost sweet? Maybe incense from centuries ago. Hatshepsut’s temple was next, carved right into those cliffs. A group of local kids waved at us from behind a fence; one tried to sell me a tiny clay cat (I caved). The Colossi of Memnon stood there looking bored by all our photos.

Lunch was loud—lots of clinking plates and laughter from other tables. We tried something called ful medames; Amr joked it’s Egypt’s answer to coffee (not sure I agree). Afterwards, drifting on a felucca across the Nile felt unreal—the water slapped gently against wood and for once nobody talked much. The sun hit my face just right and I almost dozed off. Karnak Temple was our last stop: columns so massive you have to lean back just to see their tops. My phone is full of blurry photos because I kept forgetting to hold still.

The drive back to Hurghada blurred by in patches of sleep and half-remembered stories from Amr about ancient gods who got lost in deserts or turned into birds. There’s something about seeing Luxor like this—a day trip packed with old stones, new friends, weird snacks—that sticks with you longer than any souvenir.
