The experience

The driver picks you up from your Hurghada hotel before dawn and drives you to Luxor, where your guide meets you to begin the day. Karnak Temple is the first stop: the largest temple complex ever built, spread across 247 acres with three main temples, smaller enclosed temples and outer sanctuaries that represent generations of pharaohs and builders. The scale alone sets the tone for what follows.

From there you move to the Valley of the Kings, the final resting place of Egypt's rulers from the 18th to the 20th dynasty. The tombs here (including those of Ramses II and Tutankhamen) were stocked with goods for the afterlife, and much of the decoration inside remains well preserved. Next is the Temple of Hatshepsut, built on three levels with two wide ramps connecting them, and counted among the best-preserved temples of ancient Egypt. The day closes at the Colossi of Memnon, two massive quartzite sandstone statues of King Amenhotep III that were quarried in Cairo and moved 700 kilometers to Luxor. All that remains of a complete mortuary temple.
