Cairo: Pyramids, Egyptian Museum & Sphinx Day Trip from HurghadaFull-day Cairo tour from Hurghada with Giza Pyramids, Egyptian Museum (120,000 artifacts), Great Sphinx and lunch included. Hotel pickup, local guide, returns by 10:15pm.★ 4.83 (746)14h–15hUS$ 130View › The day didn’t start exactly as planned — I forgot my sunglasses in the rush, and our driver just laughed when I squinted at the sunrise somewhere outside Hurghada. The road to Cairo is long (about 5 hours), but honestly, it went by faster than I thought. Our guide, Youssef, kept telling stories about pharaohs and old desert routes while we passed tiny villages where kids waved at our car. I tried to nap but couldn’t stop peeking out the window at those endless stretches of sand.
First stop: the Egyptian Museum. It’s massive — almost overwhelming — and smells faintly of old paper and dust. Youssef pointed out King Tut’s golden mask (way shinier than I’d pictured) and told us about a cat mummy that apparently brings luck if you rub its paw. Not sure if he was joking or not. Lunch after was in a noisy local spot near Tahrir Square; the bread was warm and soft, and whatever that green dip was, I still think about it sometimes.
And then there were the Pyramids. You see them in photos all your life but standing there with Cairo’s haze in the air and camels groaning nearby — it’s different. The Sphinx looks both tired and patient, like he’s seen everything already. Our guide explained how nobody really knows what happened to his nose (I guessed aliens; Youssef rolled his eyes). We skipped the big crowds thanks to our private car — felt good not being herded around for once. There was an optional stop at a papyrus shop on the way back; I tried writing my name in hieroglyphs (badly), which made everyone laugh.
