Your English-speaking guide meets you in Aqaba and takes you straight to Petra, the rose-red city carved into sandstone cliffs over 2,000 years ago by the Nabataeans.

The day's centerpiece is the horseback ride through the Siq, a natural canyon that narrows to a crack in the rock. You ride for about 1.2 kilometers, walls rising on both sides, carved with statues and niches that the Nabataeans left behind. The Treasury—Al-Khazneh—appears suddenly at the canyon's mouth, a temple facade so elaborate and so tall it stops you. After that, the tour moves through the Street of Facades, where tomb entrances line the rock face like a row of mansions, then continues to the Monastery and the Roman theatre.
