The Experience

The royal mummy of Tutankhamun lies inside his tomb in the Valley of the Kings: the only burial chamber discovered nearly intact, found by Howard Carter in 1922. You'll stand face to face with it, then move through three more royal tombs: the Tomb of Ramses III, decorated with painted reliefs and scenes of foreign tributes; the Tomb of Merenptah, built on a single axis with unusually wide corridors; and the Tomb of Horemheb. An Egyptologist guide walks you through each one, placing the young king (who ascended the throne at ten and died at nineteen) inside the dynasty and the mythology that shaped his burial.

After the Valley, you cross to the Temple of Hatshepsut, the mortuary shrine of Egypt's only female pharaoh and an ancestor of Tutankhamun. Then you see the Colossi of Memnon, two massive statues from the era of King Amenhotep III, Tutankhamun's grandfather. Lunch (Egyptian food, with a vegetarian option) happens at a restaurant on the West Bank. The afternoon takes you to the East Bank: Karnak Temples, where you walk the Hypostyle Hall and past obelisks raised by Hatshepsut and Tutomosis I, then Luxor Temple, dedicated to Amun-Ra, with statues of Ramses the Great and an avenue lined with sphinxes. The driver returns you to Safaga harbor by late afternoon.

Pickup happens at Safaga harbor according to your ship's arrival time. The tour is timed so you're back before departure. Transport is by air-conditioned vehicle. The guide speaks English or Arabic. All entrance fees, lunch, and the return journey are included in the price.
