The experience
Nine hours starting before sunrise means you're airborne over the West Bank while the light is still soft. Hotel pickup comes early, then a motorboat crosses the Nile with cake, tea and coffee on board. Once the balloon is inflated and weather permits, you rise for 45 minutes to an hour watching the Valley of the Kings and the surrounding desert unfold below. The flight ends on the ground where your guide meets you to begin the walking portion of the day.
The Valley of the Kings comes first, where you enter the sprawling desert site and move through a selection of pharaonic tombs with your Egyptologist guide explaining the history carved into the walls. From there you walk to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari, a 15th-century complex of colonnaded terraces built by Queen Hatshepsut, then stand before the Colossi of Memnon: two massive quartzite statues that once guarded the entrance to Amenhotep III's mortuary temple. The Valley of the Queens follows, where you spend an hour at the tomb of Queen Nefertari.
The East Bank sites close the day. Karnak Temple is a vast maze of columns, chapels and sphinxes connected to Luxor Temple by a 1.5-mile avenue of sphinxes. Luxor Temple, your final stop, has undergone recent restoration that has brought back brightly colored paintings on the walls. Throughout the day, your guide provides the context that ties these separate monuments into a single narrative of ancient Egypt's power and belief.
