The Experience
I didn’t expect the Colossi of Memnon to be so quiet. We pulled up early—our driver weaving through Luxor traffic like he’d done it a thousand times—and there they were, just standing in the morning haze. Two massive stone faces looking out over fields and distant palms. Our guide, Ahmed, joked that they’d seen more sunrises than anyone alive. I tried to imagine what they’d witnessed. The air smelled faintly dusty, but sweet too—maybe from the sugarcane nearby?
The real heart-thumper for me was walking into the Valley of the Kings. It’s not flashy from outside—just low hills and pale rock—but then you step down into these painted tombs and it hits you: this was someone’s forever home. Ahmed pointed out tiny details in the wall art (he called one pharaoh’s hat “the original party crown,” which made us laugh). We visited four tombs—Ramses III, Ramses IV, Merenptah—and honestly, it felt like time folded in on itself down there. My shirt stuck to my back from the heat but I barely noticed.
I’ll admit I didn’t know much about Queen Hatshepsut before this day trip from Luxor to her temple. The place is carved right into a cliff—so dramatic it almost feels modern. Ahmed told us how she ruled as Pharaoh (not just queen), which still blows my mind. There were local women selling little trinkets by the entrance, calling out greetings in Arabic and English. I bought a carved scarab beetle for luck—I’m not superstitious but why not? Afterward we had lunch at a spot Ahmed picked; grilled chicken, bread warm enough to burn your fingers if you weren’t careful, mint tea that tasted like summer gardens.
