The experience

Your guide picks you up from your Luxor hotel and drives you across the Nile to the West Bank, where the Theban Necropolis begins. The Valley of the Kings holds the tombs of more than 60 New Kingdom pharaohs (Ramses II, Seti I, Tutankhamun and others) carved deep into desert hillsides. You'll enter three handpicked tombs included in your ticket, where vivid wall paintings still show scenes of the afterlife, sacred rituals and the journey to immortality. Your Egyptologist explains burial customs and mummification practices as you move through hidden chambers and read ancient inscriptions. If you want to see the Tomb of Tutankhamun, that's available for an additional fee.

Next you head to Deir el-Bahari, where the Temple of Hatshepsut rises in three levels against dramatic cliffs. Queen Hatshepsut was one of Egypt's few female pharaohs and one of its most successful. She ruled by portraying herself as a male ruler, and her successors nearly erased her legacy from history. The temple's long ramps and reliefs show her divine birth and trading expeditions to the land of Punt. You walk through the structure and learn how she defied convention to hold power.

On the return to your hotel, you stop at the Colossi of Memnon: two stone statues over 20 meters tall that once guarded a grand mortuary temple now mostly vanished. They stand as the iconic symbols of Luxor's western bank. Your guide shares the history and legends of the ancient land as you wrap up the tour, and you're driven back to your hotel with bottled water and time for photographs along the way.
