The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a drive to the West Bank, where the Valley of the Kings holds the tombs of the pharaohs carved into the desert rock. Your Egyptologist guide leads you through the passages and chambers, explaining the hieroglyphics and the burial practices that shaped ancient Egypt. The Valley itself is the anchor of the morning. Everything else on this tour radiates from it.

After the tombs, you move to the Temple of Hatshepsut, a mortuary temple that rises in three massive terraces from the desert floor into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. The scale is what stops people. The temple was built for a female pharaoh in an age when that was rare, and the architecture announces it. From there, a short drive takes you to the Colossi of Memnon, two enormous seated statues that once guarded the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III. You stand in front of them, and the guide fills in what the stones no longer say.

Lunch happens at a local restaurant partway through the day, breaking up the heat and the walking. The tour wraps with a return to your hotel, so the logistics of getting across the Nile and back are handled.
