The experience

Your guide picks you up at Safaga Port in an air-conditioned vehicle and drives you to Luxor, where the tour begins at Valley of the Kings. This is the burial ground of Egypt's most powerful rulers from the 18th to 20th dynasty, home to the tombs of Ramses II and Tutankhamen. The interiors remain well preserved, their walls and ceilings still decorated with hieroglyphics and scenes meant to guide the pharaohs into the afterlife. You walk through the tombs themselves, seeing firsthand the scale of what was buried with these rulers: the material goods, the artwork, the engineering that went into carving chambers deep into the rock.

From there you move to the Temple of Hatshepsut, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. It rises in three levels connected by wide ramps, built into the desert cliffs rather than standing apart from them. Next comes Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex ever built: the combined work of generations of pharaohs and builders, with massive columns, courtyards and sanctuaries that give a sense of the scale of ancient Egyptian ambition. After lunch at a local restaurant, you visit the Colossi of Memnon, two enormous stone statues of King Amenhotep III carved from quartzite sandstone that was quarried in Cairo and transported 700 kilometers to Luxor. These are all that remain of a complete mortuary temple. Your guide then returns you to Safaga Port in time for your ship.
