The experience

The first thing I noticed after our driver picked us up from the hotel in Luxor was how quiet the West Bank felt compared to the city. Our Egyptologist, Amr, greeted us with this easy warmth: he’d grown up nearby and seemed to know every stone. The sun was already sharp as we reached the Valley of the Kings. I remember dust crunching under my shoes and Amr laughing when I tried to pronounce “Tutankhamun” properly (I definitely didn’t). Going down into King Tut’s tomb, it was cooler than I expected, almost a relief, and there was this faint smell of old earth and stone. Seeing his mummy right there, just a glass case away, felt stranger than I thought it would. Not scary exactly, but real in a way museums never are.

We wandered through other tombs: Ramesses III’s walls looked like someone had painted them yesterday, all those colors still bright after thousands of years.
