The Experience

So you're stuck in Sharm El Sheikh for a day and someone mentions the Pyramids are only a bus ride away — and yeah, it sounds mad, but it actually works. The tour picks you up from your hotel in the morning and you spend the next ten or so hours heading inland to Cairo by air-conditioned bus, which means you're not sweating through the drive or figuring out transport yourself. The Giza Pyramids are the first real stop — Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinos all standing there like they've been waiting for you, and you get two to three hours to walk around them, or if you want to do it differently, you can hire a camel or horse to move between them. It's not rushed, and the scale of the place doesn't really hit until you're standing in front of it.

After the pyramids you walk over to the Great Sphinx, which takes maybe twenty or thirty minutes. The limestone head on the lion's body is the thing you've seen in a hundred photos, but seeing it in person is different — it's massive and worn and somehow still commanding the space around it. Then there's the Egyptian Museum in Cairo itself, which is where the actual treasures are: mummies, gold, statues, all the stuff that makes you understand why people have been obsessed with ancient Egypt for centuries. The museum is dense — you could spend a full day in there — but the tour gives you the main galleries, so you're not wandering lost. Lunch is included somewhere in the middle of the day, and if you want to add a Nile boat ride it's ten euros extra per person, or you can just walk along the banks for free and sit with a coffee.

Before heading back to Sharm, the buses have to wait for the convoy that leaves Cairo at the end of the day, so there's a stop or two at places like the Papyrus Museum or an Essential Oil Factory — these are working demonstrations of how ancient techniques are still used, and honestly it's interesting if you're curious about how Egyptians made paper and perfume back then. It also supports local craftspeople who've kept these skills alive. The whole thing is a long day, but you're not doing any of the logistics yourself — no arranging tickets, no figuring out how to get from the airport to the pyramids, no haggling with drivers. You just show up at your hotel in the morning and come back in the evening.
