Roast cocoa beans, grind them, and shape chocolate you made yourself

The Eden Chocolate Tour is a hands-on class where you roast and grind cocoa beans, learn the conching and refining process, and make your own chocolate bonbons at an organic plantation near La Fortuna. The experience runs two and a half hours and includes a tasting of five different chocolates, caramelized cocoa seeds, a cacao tea, and a typical Costa Rican lunch afterward. A live guide in English or Spanish leads the whole thing.

The Experience

The tour starts in the cocoa plantation itself, where you see the cocoa flowers and trees growing, then watch the fermentation and sun-drying process that turns raw beans into something usable. That first part grounds you in where chocolate actually comes from — not a factory floor, but soil and sun and time. Then you move into the ranch to do the work yourself: roasting the beans, grinding them, learning how conching and refining turn ground cocoa into the smooth paste that becomes chocolate. By the end of that sequence, you shape your own bonbons by hand.

The tasting runs through five different chocolates the plantation makes, plus caramelized cocoa seeds and a cacao tea brewed from the plant itself. These are not samples you rush through; they are the flavors that define what Eden does. After the chocolate part wraps, you sit down to a Costa Rican lunch made by people who work at the plantation — not a catering spread, but food tied to the place you have spent the morning.

The whole experience fits into two and a half hours. A guide in English or Spanish walks you through each step, so you are not figuring out the process alone. The plantation is set on rustic, natural ground where birds and animals move through, which changes the feel of the morning from a workshop to something closer to being outside.
