Step-by-step itinerary
Coffee and chocolate plantation tour
- Walk through coffee and cacao fields
- Learn harvesting and roasting process
- Taste freshly prepared coffee and chocolate
The Experience
The tour starts at your hotel and moves straight into the fields. You'll walk through working plantations of coffee and cacao while your guide points out the plants, the pods, and how the property is laid out. This is not a museum—you're standing in the actual crops that will become what you taste later, and the guide explains what you're looking at as you move through.
From there you watch the full process: how coffee cherries and cacao pods are harvested, dried, roasted, and ground using traditional Costa Rican methods. The roasting and grinding happen in front of you, so you see the beans change color and smell the shift from raw to finished. Then you taste. Fresh coffee and rich chocolate made from what you've just walked past—the flavors land differently when you know where they came from. The whole experience runs about two and a half hours, and your guide brings you back to your hotel when it's done.
Groups max out at eight people, which means the guide can actually answer questions and move at a pace that works. Pickup is included if your hotel sits within ten minutes of La Fortuna Area; if you're staying further out, public transportation options are nearby. The plantation is wheelchair accessible, surfaces are flat, and strollers work fine if you're traveling with infants.
