Nine cables strung between rainforest platforms, with Arenal Volcano filling the view.

A combo activity in La Fortuna that pairs a canopy zipline tour with a hands-on cultural tasting. You zipline across 9 cables and 10 platforms ranging from 80 to 550 meters above the rainforest, then move to a demonstration space to learn how Costa Ricans make coffee, chocolate and sugar cane juice — and taste each one. The tour runs 3 hours, includes pickup from downtown La Fortuna, and a live guide leads in English or Spanish. Children from age 4 can zipline; guests over 125 kg are not permitted on the cables.

Step-by-step itinerary

Zipline and cultural tasting tour

  • Zipline canopy tour over rainforest
  • Enjoy views of Arenal Volcano
  • Learn coffee production process
  • Participate in chocolate-making demo
  • Taste sugar cane juice and more

The Experience

The zipline circuit starts with a certified guide walking you through the rainforest canopy. You'll clip into 9 cables that drop you between 10 platforms, each one higher or lower than the last, with cable lengths that stretch from 80 meters up to 550 meters. The longest runs let you glide long enough to take in Arenal Volcano and Cerro Chato rising above the forest, with streams visible below. The platforms themselves are the anchor points — you're not dangling between trees, you're standing on solid ground between each run, catching your breath and adjusting to the height before the next cable.

After the zipline section wraps, you move into the cultural part of the tour. This is hands-on: you'll see how coffee gets processed from bean to cup, watch an artisanal chocolate demonstration, and learn the traditional method for extracting sugar cane juice. As each process unfolds, you taste what comes out of it — fresh coffee, chocolate made right there, and the juice. The guide explains why these three products matter in Costa Rican culture and daily life, not as a lecture but as you're tasting them. Pickup from downtown La Fortuna and surrounding areas is included, so you don't arrange transport yourself.

The whole experience runs 3 hours. Children as young as 4 can zipline, though they need to meet the weight and health requirements — anyone over 125 kg cannot participate on the cables, and the tour isn't recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns. The guide speaks English or Spanish depending on your group.

Top questions

Can a 4-year-old actually zipline on this tour, or is that just the minimum age?

Children from age 4 can zipline on this tour. They'll need to be comfortable at height and meet the weight requirement (under 125 kg), but age 4 is the operator's stated minimum, and kids that age do participate on the cables and platforms.

What exactly happens during the coffee, chocolate and sugar cane part?

The cultural section is a hands-on demonstration where you watch each product being made — coffee processed from bean to cup, chocolate made in front of you, and sugar cane juice extracted using traditional methods. You taste each one as it's finished, and the guide explains how these products fit into Costa Rican life and tradition.

How long are the actual ziplines on this tour?

The 9 cables range from 80 meters to 550 meters in length. The longest ones give you time to take in the views of Arenal Volcano and Cerro Chato while you're gliding, and the shorter ones keep the pace varied across the 10 platforms.

Is transportation from my hotel included?

Pickup is included from downtown La Fortuna and surrounding areas. If you're staying outside that zone, check with the operator about whether your location is covered, but the standard pickup area is central La Fortuna.

What's the age limit for the zipline — is there a maximum?

There's no stated maximum age, but guests over 125 kg (275 lbs) cannot participate on the zipline for safety reasons. The tour also isn't recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health.

How much time does the whole tour take?

The tour runs 3 hours total, including both the zipline canopy section and the coffee, chocolate and sugar cane demonstrations with tastings.
