I’m not sure what I expected from a “canopy adventure” near Arenal, but my hands were already sweating before we even left La Fortuna. The van ride was only half an hour, but I kept glancing at the clouds hanging over the volcano and thinking about heights. Our guide—Diego—had this way of making everyone laugh during the safety briefing, which helped. He double-checked our harnesses and cracked a joke about how nobody ever looks cool in a helmet (he’s right). I could smell wet earth and something sweet, maybe guava? The forest felt alive.
The first platform was higher than it looked from below—25 meters up—and standing there made my knees wobble a bit. Diego clipped me in himself, gave me this nod like “you got this,” and then suddenly I was flying over green that just kept going. The wind was loud in my ears, but I remember catching flashes of yellow flowers below and cows grazing way out on the farmland. Each cable had its own mood: some fast, some longer where you could actually look around if you dared open your eyes for more than a second.
There were 13 platforms total, four built right into these massive trees (they told us they use special anchors so the trees keep growing—Costa Ricans really care about that stuff). At one point we all tried to say “ceibo” like Diego did; Li laughed when I butchered it in Spanish. The Tarzan swing at the end… well, let’s just say my scream echoed back at me through the forest. Afterward they handed out fresh fruit—I swear pineapple never tasted that good—and we all sat catching our breath together. Still think about that view sometimes when things get too quiet at home.
