Eight cables strung between 13 platforms, some anchored in living trees.

Arenal Canopy Adventure is a zipline activity near La Fortuna where you clip into 8 cables that cross 2 km of rainforest canopy, reaching speeds up to 56 kph between platforms set 20 to 90 meters high. Two expert guides manage your connection and braking at every cable, and hotel pickup is included. Minimum age is 6; not recommended for pregnant travelers.

The Experience

The experience starts with a 30-minute drive from La Fortuna to the zipline park. Once there, expert guides fit you into your gear and walk you through the safety briefing. You'll climb to the first platform at 25 meters, then work your way across 8 cables strung between 13 platforms total. Four of those platforms are built into enormous trees using a specialized anchor system that lets the trees keep growing unharmed—a detail that matters if you're thinking about the weight and the wood holding it. The cables themselves range from 20 meters to 90 meters high, and they stretch between 70 and 600 meters in length, which is why you'll hit speeds up to 56 kph on the longer runs.

Each cable has its own view. You'll fly above canyons, mountains, farmland and dense rainforest, and every platform gives you a different angle into the tree canopy and a chance to catch your breath and take photographs. The guides stay with you—one connects you safely to each cable and watches the group waiting their turn, while the other helps you brake and disconnects you once you reach the platform. The cable and braking systems are regularly inspected, and the safety protocols are reviewed constantly, so the setup is built around control, not just speed. Bottled water and fresh fruit are provided during the activity.

The whole thing runs about 2 hours from start to finish. You can book this as a shared tour with other guests or as a private experience. Both options include hotel pickup and drop-off from La Fortuna, professional guides who speak English or Spanish, and all the gear you need.
