Hike to a 70-Meter Waterfall, Then Zip Through the Canopy Above Arenal

You hike through rainforest to a 70-meter waterfall with a swimming pool at its base, then spend the afternoon ziplining through the canopy with views of Arenal Volcano. Lunch at a local restaurant, all gear and transport included, means you show up and the day unfolds without logistics getting in the way.

4h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Hike to La Fortuna Waterfall
  • Swim in waterfall pool
  • Zipline over treetops
  • Lunch at Restaurante El Perezoso

The Experience

So you're standing at the base of La Fortuna Waterfall after hiking through actual rainforest — not a manicured path, but the real thing, vines and mud and the sound of water getting louder as you go — and the pool below is cold and clear and you're thinking about jumping in. That's the first half. After you dry off and grab your gear, you're clipped into a harness and stepping off a platform, and suddenly you're flying over the treetops with the Arenal Volcano sitting there in the distance like it's been waiting for you to notice it. The AirTime Zipline Canopy Tour runs you through a series of lines that let you see the jungle from above, which is a completely different thing than walking through it.

The whole day moves at a pace that doesn't feel rushed. You start with the waterfall hike — it's steep enough that you feel it, but the guides know the trail and they're not pushing you to sprint. Once you're done swimming and changing, you head to the zipline section, which takes up the afternoon. Between the two, Restaurante El Perezoso (a local spot in La Fortuna) serves you lunch with fresh ingredients and enough protein options that vegetarian and vegan travelers aren't eating around the edges of someone else's meal. The courtesy drink at the start helps too, especially if you're coming from a hot hotel.

Transportation is handled — they pick you up and bring you back — so you're not figuring out how to get to La Fortuna on your own or negotiating with a taxi driver about the route. Equipment for the zipline is included, and so are all the fees, which means the price you see is the price you pay. Groups stay small enough that the guides can actually watch you, not just count heads.
