The Experience
"Pura vida isn’t just a saying, it’s how we walk," our guide Marco grinned as he nudged the van door open. I’d barely finished my coffee when we rolled up to Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, mist still tangled in the trees. Marco pointed out a toucan before I even noticed the bridges — his eyes were sharper than mine. The air was thick and green-smelling, like wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t name.
The bridges themselves felt sort of surreal underfoot — swaying just enough to remind you you’re high above the forest floor. There were spider monkeys somewhere above us (we heard them first), and then a sudden hush except for water dripping from leaves. I tried to take a photo but mostly just ended up laughing at myself. Marco told us about the different tree frogs — I only spotted one, tiny and bright as a candy wrapper.
After that hike, honestly, my legs were jelly. We piled back into the van and headed to La Fortuna Waterfall. The path down is steep (Marco warned us), but there’s this moment halfway where sunlight cuts through and everything glows — I didn’t expect that part. The sound of the waterfall is huge, almost physical. Some folks swam; I dipped my toes and watched blue morpho butterflies flicker past. Still think about that cold splash on my ankles.
Lunch was at the Rodriguez family’s place — not a restaurant exactly, more like someone’s big kitchen with chickens wandering outside. Rice, beans, plantains, chicken in sauce that tasted like lime and garlic (I asked for seconds). We talked about football and weather in broken Spanish and English. Marco teased me for eating so slow but no one seemed in a hurry anyway.
