The Experience
We pulled up to Airtime Zipline just outside downtown La Fortuna, and I could already hear this low hum from the jungle — cicadas maybe? Our guide, Diego, handed us helmets and harnesses (mine felt a little awkward at first, but he checked it twice). I was nervous, honestly. The Arenal Volcano was half-hidden in clouds that morning, but every now and then the peak showed itself. Diego grinned and said, “If you see a sloth on the way up, make a wish.” He was only half-joking — we did spot one curled up in a cecropia tree by the practice line.
The first cable is just for practice. My hands were shaking a bit (don’t judge), but once I pushed off, it was this weird mix of wind in my face and the smell of wet leaves — like after rain. The lines aren’t super high or scary; even kids were zipping along ahead of me, their laughter echoing through the trees. One of them waved at her mom on the platform below. It’s funny how quickly you forget to be afraid when you’re busy looking for toucans or trying to pronounce “Arenal” right (I still say it wrong).
By the fourth or fifth cable, I wasn’t thinking about anything except how green everything looked. There’s this moment — you’re halfway across and suddenly there’s nothing but forest under your feet, and if you time it right with the clouds lifting, you get that full volcano view. Not dramatic or anything, just… real. I remember Diego pointing out some monkeys in the distance; we all stopped to watch for a minute before heading to the next platform. The whole thing took maybe two hours? It felt shorter somehow.
I keep thinking about that last platform — everyone high-fived each other like old friends even though we’d just met an hour ago. My hair smelled like metal from the helmet mixed with rainforest air. If you’re looking for a day trip in La Fortuna that’s not too intense but still makes your heart race (in a good way), this zipline adventure is probably it.
