Step-by-step itinerary

Canyoning adventure and lunch

  • Shuttle with Arenal Volcano view
  • Waterfall rappelling and rock climbing
  • Experience the Monkey Drop
  • Spot toucans, sloths, and monkeys
  • Return to Pure Trek headquarters
  • Enjoy garden-fresh lunch

The Experience

You get picked up from your La Fortuna hotel and driven to the Pure Trek canyon, with views of Arenal Volcano during the shuttle. Once there, a certified guide gears you up and leads you into the canyon itself — the real work starts with the first waterfall rappel. You'll descend four separate waterfalls using ropes and harnesses, each one a different height and angle, and between rappels you'll scramble over rocks and through shallow water, reading the canyon as you move. The guide handles the technical setup; your job is to trust the equipment and commit to each drop.

The Monkey Drop is what sets Pure Trek apart — a jump from a rock ledge into a deep pool below, optional but most people take it. It's the moment the activity stops being about technique and becomes about nerve. After the rappels, you'll do some rock climbing sections to keep moving through the canyon. The whole time, guides watch for wildlife: toucans, sloths, howler monkeys. You'll get soaked, which is the point.

Once you're back at Pure Trek's headquarters, lunch is waiting — garden-fresh and cooked on-site, with a vegetarian option if you've requested it at booking. You'll have time to dry off, change into the clothes you brought, and eat before the van takes you back to your hotel. A photographer documents the day; photos are available for purchase if you want them.

How many people go on each canyoning tour?

Pure Trek runs shared group tours, so you'll be with other travelers; the exact group size varies by departure, but the canyon and the guide's attention accommodate multiple people at once.

Can I bring my five-year-old on this canyoning tour?

Yes, Pure Trek welcomes children from age 5 and has guided thousands of clients of all ages through the canyon, though kids need to be comfortable with water and climbing and have at least moderate physical fitness.

What time does the tour start, and how long does it take?

Pure Trek offers multiple departure times throughout the day — 8 am, 9 am, 1 pm, and 2 pm — and the full experience, including lunch, runs four hours from start to finish.

Do I need to bring my own shoes, or are they provided?

You need to wear shoes that can get wet and have straps (no flip-flops); bring a change of dry clothes for after the tour, and Pure Trek will provide the harness, ropes and safety gear.

Is there anything I should know before booking if I have a health concern?

Pure Trek recommends moderate physical fitness and is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health; talk to the operator at booking if you have questions about your situation.
