Step-by-step itinerary

Coffee and chocolate farm tour

  • Pick up at La Fortuna hotel
  • Explore coffee planting and harvesting
  • Learn coffee roasting and brewing
  • Discover cacao origins and culture
  • Participate in chocolate preparation
  • Taste fresh coffee and chocolate

The Experience

You start at your hotel in La Fortuna, where the driver picks you up and takes you to a working farm. A local guide meets you there and walks you through the coffee process first—planting, harvesting, roasting, and brewing—explaining why these beans matter to Costa Rica's history and daily life. Then you move into cacao: the guide shows you how the fruit becomes chocolate, talks about its role in pre-Columbian culture, and hands you the tools to participate in the actual preparation.

The hands-on part is what sets this apart. You're not watching someone else roast or grind; you're doing it. The farm has the equipment ready, and the guide talks you through each step. By the time you reach the tasting room, you've handled the raw materials and understand what went into them. The coffee tastes different when you've roasted it yourself, and the chocolate—offered in different forms—lands differently too.

The whole visit runs between two and three hours. The air-conditioned vehicle brings you back to your hotel when it's done. Wear comfortable clothes and bring water; the farm can be muddy after rain, so tennis or hiking shoes work better than sandals. Children from five onward can join, and the guide adjusts the pace and detail to the group.
