The Experience

We started the chocolate & night tour in La Fortuna just after sunset, right when the air felt heavy but not too hot—kind of that sticky rainforest feeling I didn’t realize I’d actually like. Our guide, Diego, was already grinning at us before we even made it to the cocoa beans. He had this way of making you feel like you’re about to be let in on a family secret. I still remember the smell—roasted cocoa, a little earthy, almost smoky. We all got to try grinding the beans (my arms are not built for that, honestly), and Diego laughed when my “chocolate bar” came out looking more like a lump than anything else. Still tasted good though.

The tasting part was funnier than I expected—people arguing over which was best: dark chocolate or milk. I thought I’d be all about the dark stuff, but the white chocolate surprised me (don’t judge). My shoes got muddy anyway despite the path being paved; go figure.
