The experience

You start with a pickup by traditional Jeep, the iconic vehicle of coffee culture, and ride into the Andean foothills to reach the farm. La Unión sits in Colombia's Coffee Cultural Landscape, the UNESCO-declared region known for its centennial coffee-growing tradition. The owners, Elizabeth and her husband, run the operation under strict sustainability criteria and will walk you through the plantation themselves, not as a tour but as a working farm where you participate in what they actually do.

The walk covers the coffee trees (Castillo and Colombia varieties), and moves through the wider ecosystem: banana plants, cocoa, avocado, orange, lemon, mango, guanabana and other fruits grow alongside the coffee. You'll see the composting area where organic waste becomes soil, the vermiculture beds, and the nursery where seedlings start. The farm produces special Colombian coffee, and you learn the process step by step, from how the cherry ripens on the tree to what happens after harvest. The owners also talk about their lives as neo-peasants, their approach to clean agriculture, and the culture that shapes how they work.

The final part is hands-on: Elizabeth and her husband teach you how to prepare Colombian coffee the way they do it. Simple enough that you can replicate it at home. Snacks and coffee or tea are included, and the whole experience runs four hours. Transportation from other cities costs an additional $25 USD if you're not staying in La Unión.

What’s included

  • Private Jeep transportation from your hotel.
  • entrance to the farm and the guide.
  • snacks.
  • coffee and/or tea.
  • instruction in how to brew Colombian coffee yourself.

Is this one for you?The walk is on a working farm with uneven ground, and you'll spend time on your feet moving between the plantation, the composting area, the nursery and the preparation space. If you're comfortable with a morning of moderate walking and want to understand coffee from the people who grow it rather than visit a polished attraction, this is the experience that delivers it.
