Coffee Tour in Pereira: Grow, process and taste
You roast and brew the coffee you picked from the plant.
A three-hour coffee class at Finca del Café in Pereira teaches you to cultivate, process and prepare coffee using traditional methods on a UNESCO World Heritage site. You pick beans from the plant, process them by hand, roast and brew two tastings of single-origin coffee; a local guide leads the class in English or Spanish, and you keep the poncho, basket and hat provided for the work. Children from age 6 are welcome.
The Experience
The class starts with the plant itself. You learn what makes the coffee cultural landscape of Colombia a World Heritage site, then move into the fields to pick ripe beans by hand. The guide shows you how to spot them and what the soil and altitude mean for flavor. This is not a walk through someone else's farm—you're doing the work, holding the basket, understanding the first step that most coffee drinkers never see.
Once you've picked enough, the processing begins. You learn the traditional method: how to remove the pulp, ferment the beans, dry them in the sun. The guide walks you through each stage and explains why each one matters. Then comes the roast. You roast your own beans over heat, learning the color changes that signal when to stop. The smell fills the space and changes as you work—this is the moment the raw seed becomes what you recognize as coffee.
The final step is brewing. You prepare two tastings from beans you've roasted, tasting them side by side to notice the differences. A special cold coffee drink is included. The whole sequence—seed to cup—takes about three hours. You leave with the gear: the poncho, basket and hat stay with you as a record of the work.

- Two tastings of single-origin coffee you roast and brew yourself.
