The experience

The farm sits a few minutes outside Pereira, and the guide picks you up from your hotel to get there. Once you arrive, one of the owners walks you through the coffee crops to show how the plants grow and what makes the production process work. You'll see the details of cultivation that let Colombian coffee express its best flavors (the spacing, the altitude, the soil) explained by someone who tends these plants every day.

After the crops, you move to the roasting area, where a master roaster walks you through the methods that turn raw beans into the coffee you drink. Different flavors and preparations come through during the tour, each one tasting different from the last. You'll learn one of the preparation methods hands-on, so by the end you can make a cup that actually tastes like something, not just hot water with coffee in it. The whole experience runs about four hours.
