The experience

The day starts with a 7:30am pickup from your hotel, then a 90-minute drive northwest to Cu Chi Tunnels through rural landscape. Rice paddies, water buffalos, rivers. The tunnels themselves are the remnants of a fierce battleground. The itinerary notes you can fire an AK-47 if you choose. By midday you'll head back toward My Tho City, a two-hour drive south, with a lunch stop along the way at a riverside restaurant serving Vietnamese cuisine.

Once in My Tho, the pace shifts to water. A motorboat takes you through a small canal lined with coconut trees, leading to Ben Tre island in the Mekong Delta. You'll disembark and walk the village, stopping at a local family's home where you taste tropical fruits, honey tea and honey wine while traditional Vietnamese music plays. A coconut candy shop teaches you how the candy is made. You'll also see handicrafts carved from coconut wood. The rowboat comes next: a leisurely drift back through the delta before the tour ends at your hotel around 7pm.

The group size matters here. You're in a van with 9 to 12 people maximum, not a bus with 40, which changes how the stops feel and how long you can linger. Hotel pickup and drop-off in districts 1, 3 and 4 means no negotiating a taxi ride at the start or end of a long day.
