The Experience

The motorboat leaves My Tho pier at mid-morning, and you're already moving past floating fish farms and under the Rach Mieu cable-stayed bridge that connects two provinces across the Tien River. The pickup happens at 7:30 AM from your hotel in District 1, then it's a two-hour drive south to reach the water. Once there, the pace shifts — you stop for 30 minutes at Con Lan to visit a local honey bee farm, taste honey tea that tastes nothing like what you'd expect, and then an electric cart takes you through a fruit garden where you pick seasonal tropical fruit straight off the trees while traditional Southern music plays from speakers somewhere you can't quite locate.

The rowing boat comes next, and this is the part that stays with you. You sit in a wooden boat that moves by hand-oar through shaded canals, the water so still you can see your reflection, and the guide doesn't rush it. After that, the motorboat takes you across to Ben Tre province — known locally as the coconut island — where you stop at a coconut candy oven and watch how they make it.
