The experience

The itinerary flips the usual boat-focused approach. You arrive at Cat Ba town, take a speedboat past Cai Beo fishing village to Viet Hai port, then cycle 6 kilometers through rice fields and valleys, or choose an electric car instead, to reach Viet Hai Village, an isolated settlement of about 300 people tucked inside Cat Ba National Park. After dropping your bag at the private bungalow where you'll sleep, you trek uphill through rainforest to Navy Peak, where the bay opens below you in a single view. Dinner happens in the village, and you spend the night by a natural stream.

Day two starts before dawn. After breakfast you cycle back to the port and board a boat heading south into Ha Long Bay. The morning stops at Bat Cave and Bright Cave for kayaking through hidden lagoons. You paddle yourself, not watch from the deck. Lunch is a set menu served on the boat. The afternoon spreads across the water: the boat cruises past named islets (Pen, Sailing, Frog, Turtle), pauses at Three Peach Beach so you can swim and snorkel, and visits a local fish farm. Snorkeling depends on tide and weather, but the boat carries equipment you can use.

All meals are included, as are entrance fees to the park and bay. You can cycle or take the electric car on day one depending on your preference. An English-speaking guide travels with the group throughout.
