"You will see the fishermen before the tourists," our guide said as we pulled away from Beo pier, and he was right. The boat heads south into Lan Ha Bay first, where Cai Beo fishing village sits exactly as it has for centuries: wooden boats, nets drying on racks, families working the water year-round. You pass hundreds of limestone islets and sandy beaches that most day-trippers never reach because they stick to the crowded Ha Long side. The whole southern section of Lan Ha stays quieter, and that's where the morning goes.
By mid-morning the boat crosses into Ha Long Bay proper, and the landscape shifts: more dramatic rock formations, narrower channels, the kind of scenery that earned UNESCO status. This is where the kayaking happens.
