The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Hanoi hotel between 8:15 and 9:00 am, followed by a drive along the new highway to Tuan Chau Island. The route includes two stops: one for restrooms and another at a pearl factory for refreshing and facilities. You arrive at the pier by noon, board the modern ship, and receive a safety briefing before the five-hour cruise begins. The ship follows the day-sleeper route through Ha Long Bay, passing the limestone passages and islets locals have named after their shapes (Cock Fighting and Thumb among them), while you eat Vietnamese buffet lunch on deck.
By 1:45 pm the ship reaches Bo Hon archipelago. Surprising Cave opens onto stalactites and stalagmites formed into different shapes. From there you choose between kayaking or taking a bamboo boat into Luon Cave to explore the enclosed lagoon. Next is Titov Island, where a sandy beach sits below a limestone mountain. A climb up Titov Peak rewards you with a wide view of the bay. At 4:30 pm you return to the ship for afternoon tea and a slow cruise back toward Tuan Chau harbor, with time to sunbathe on the upper deck as the sun moves lower.
The ship docks by 6:00 pm and you board the return bus for the drive back to Hanoi, arriving at your hotel around 8:45 pm. An English-speaking guide stays with the group throughout. The itinerary is fixed, so all three main stops (the cave, the lagoon, and the island peak) fit into a single afternoon on the water.
