The Experience

“You’re going to want to look left,” our guide Minh said, and I almost dropped my phone trying to spot the Thumb islet he’d just pointed out. The bus ride from Hanoi was way quicker than I’d expected — that new highway really does save time. We’d barely finished our sleepy jokes when the limestone shapes started popping up through the mist. It smelled like salt and something green, and a guy behind me kept humming a tune I didn’t recognize. Minh made us laugh with his story about Cock Fighting Islet — apparently locals see animals in every rock here.

The boat felt bigger once we were actually moving through Ha Long Bay. Lunch came out in waves: sticky rice, fish with ginger, those tiny spring rolls that disappear too fast. I tried to ask Minh how you say “delicious” in Vietnamese but probably butchered it; he grinned anyway. At Surprising Cave, the air was cool and damp — almost cold on my arms after the sun outside.
