The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the color—the water around Ha Long Bay really is that weird green you see in photos. We’d barely shaken off the Hanoi bus ride when our guide, Minh, handed out cold towels and grinned like he’d done this a thousand times. He started pointing out the karsts as soon as we stepped on deck. Some looked like dragons if you squinted (or maybe I was just hungry). The boat itself was quieter than I expected—just a low hum and some chatter in Vietnamese from the crew. Lunch came out early—gingery fish, rice, something with lemongrass I still can’t pronounce. If you’re vegetarian, they sort you out too.

Sung Sot Cave (they call it Surprise Cave) was cooler inside than I thought it’d be. The air smelled damp and mineral-y, and there were these weird echoes when people laughed or called to each other ahead in the tunnels. Minh told us about some legend involving a giant and his sword—he made it sound almost believable. There were stairs—lots of them—and I definitely felt my calves by the end. A couple folks hung back on the boat (honestly not a bad call if you’re tired), but most of us followed Minh up through all those chambers with stalactites dripping overhead.

Titop Island was next—a quick stop but memorable. The sand felt coarser than I expected under my feet (tiny shells everywhere), and there was this salty breeze that made me forget how sweaty I’d gotten hiking up to that lookout point. The view is kind of wild—boats scattered below like toys. Some people swam, others just sat on rocks watching jellyfish bob by. Our boat had to leave for a bit (something about docking rules), so we all promised not to lose track of time. Someone lost a flip-flop anyway.

Kayaking at Luon Cave was my favorite part—I mean, paddling under those arches with limestone walls so close you could touch them? It went quiet for a minute except for paddles hitting water and birds somewhere above us. Minh waved from a bamboo boat nearby; he said something about lucky turtles but I didn’t catch all of it over the splashing. On the way back to Hanoi, everyone dozed or scrolled through their photos—I kept thinking about that green water and how small we looked next to those cliffs.
