The experience

The day starts with pickup at your Hanoi hotel between 7:30 and 8:15 am, then a two-hour drive to Tuan Chau Island where you board the cruise. Lunch arrives as the boat moves into Halong Bay: a set menu on the standard boat or a buffet on the premium option, with vegetarian choices available on both. From there the itinerary splits into stops: first Surprising Cave, where you walk through one of the bay's largest caverns to see stalagmites and stalactites. Then Luon Cave area, where you get into a kayak or bamboo boat and paddle through the water yourself for about 30 minutes.

At 3:30 pm you reach Titop Island and choose your own way to spend the time. Either hike to the summit for a panoramic view of the bay, or swim and relax on the beach. Back on the boat at 4:30 pm, you join the sunset party on the sundeck with fresh local fruit, cake and wine or soft drinks while the light fades over the limestone peaks. The return journey to Hanoi takes about two and a half hours, with drop-off at your hotel around 8:30 to 9 pm.

The tour operates with a live English-speaking guide throughout the day. If you book the option without bus transfer, you'll need to get yourself to Tuan Chau Island by 11:30 am. The other two options include round-trip pickup from hotels in Hanoi's Old Quarter. The premium boat adds a swimming pool on deck and a buffet lunch instead of a set menu. Water is provided on the bus. Bring sunscreen and a change of clothes for the water activities.
