The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the hush — just the soft slap of water against steel as we stepped onto Amanda Premier Cruise in Ha Long Bay. Our guide, Minh, handed me a cold towel that smelled faintly of lemongrass. I remember squinting at the sunlight bouncing off thousands of limestone islands. The boat pulled away from Tuan Chau Marina and suddenly everything felt slower, like time stretching out over the bay. Minh pointed out shapes in the rocks — one looked like a sleeping dragon if you tilted your head (I still don’t see it). My cabin had this little balcony where you could just lean out and watch fishing boats drift by. I didn’t expect to feel so quiet inside.

We kayaked around Luon Cave after lunch — honestly, my arms are not made for kayaking but Minh kept shouting encouragement from his own boat. The water was glassy green and cool on my hands. Later at Titop Island, some people climbed up for the view but I just sat on the sand with an older couple from Saigon who shared their dried mango with me (salty-sweet, weirdly addictive). Back on board there was a sunset cooking class — I chopped something wrong and got teased gently by one of the crew. The BBQ dinner on the sundeck tasted smoky and rich; I kept getting distracted by how the bay glowed pink as night came down.

I woke up early for Tai Chi on deck — not because I’m disciplined but because someone knocked softly on my door (“sunrise!”). The air was chilly and smelled faintly briny. After coffee and fruit we explored Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) with its strange echoing chambers — Minh told us a legend about hidden gold but mostly I just remember how small my voice sounded in there. There’s this herbal foot bath waiting when you get back; maybe it’s touristy but it felt good after all those steps.

It’s funny how quickly you get used to drifting through that landscape — by checkout I almost didn’t want to leave my little balcony behind. If you’re thinking about a day trip or overnight cruise from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, this one covers pretty much everything: pickup, food, kayaking, caves… but it’s those quiet moments leaning over the rail that stick with me most.

What’s included

Your journey includes round-trip transfer from Hanoi by air-conditioned bus, all entrance fees for caves and islands in Ha Long Bay, kayaking equipment for Luon Cave exploration, a premium en-suite cabin with private balcony and bathroom onboard Amanda Premier Cruise, all main meals including a BBQ dinner on the sundeck (weather permitting), morning Tai Chi class with sunrise views, a cooking class at sunset hour plus night squid fishing if you’re curious—and an English-speaking local guide throughout your stay.
