The Experience

We were already gliding past these wild limestone towers when I realized how quiet it was out there—just the hum of the Hercules cruise and the occasional shout from a fisherman in a tiny boat. I didn’t expect Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) to feel so… otherworldly? The air inside was cool and smelled faintly of wet stone. Minh shined his phone light on a stalactite that looked like a dragon’s head—he swore there’s a legend about it but got distracted showing us how the cave ceiling sparkles if you squint. After that, we paddled kayaks through Hang Luon. The water was glassy green and I kept bumping into my partner’s paddle—she laughed at me every time. There were monkeys up on the cliffs but they ignored us completely.

TiTop Island was next—a quick climb up uneven steps for this view that honestly didn’t look real (I mean, you’ve seen photos of Ha Long Bay but being up there is different). Some people swam; I just let my feet dangle in the sand and watched local kids racing each other along the waterline. On the way back, there was tea and fruit on deck while the sun started dipping behind those jagged peaks. Someone played Vietnamese pop on their phone and nobody seemed to mind. I keep thinking about that moment—how salty my skin felt, how everyone just sort of went quiet for a bit.
