The Experience

Chopsticks clinked against bowls as our boat left Tuan Chau Marina, the engine humming softly underfoot. I was still shaking off the Hanoi traffic when our guide—Minh, always grinning—handed me a cup of hot tea and pointed out the first jagged limestone towers. The air had that salty tang you only get near the sea. We drifted past islets with names Minh translated for us (one looked like a chicken, apparently), and someone’s hat nearly blew overboard. Lunch came steaming—lemongrass fish, sticky rice—while green water slid by outside the window. I kept thinking: this doesn’t look real.

It took about 100 stone steps to reach Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave), and honestly, I was out of breath before Minh even finished his story about the French explorers who named it. Inside was cool and echoey; stalactites hung like melted candles above us. The colored lights felt a bit odd at first but then made everything glow in this weirdly magical way. Minh tapped one rock and said it looked like a dragon—I squinted but mostly just saw rock. Still, everyone laughed when I tried to pronounce “Sung Sot” correctly (I did not). From the exit, there’s this wide view over Ha Long Bay that makes you stop for a second without meaning to.

Paddling a kayak through Luon Cave was quieter than I expected. Just water slapping gently against plastic and the odd bird call bouncing off stone walls. We floated into a lagoon ringed by cliffs so high they blocked out half the sky. A monkey watched us from above—I swear he rolled his eyes at my paddling technique. It felt private somehow, even with other boats nearby.

Titov Island was last—a quick swim for some people (the water tasted faintly mineral) or a sweaty climb up 423 steps for others. The view from the top is... well, you’ll see if you go. On the way back toward Lan Ha Bay, they set out fruit and wine on deck while the sun went gold-pink behind those wild peaks. Someone played music on their phone but mostly we just sat quiet, watching light flicker across the bay until it faded out completely.
