Zanzibar snorkeling & sandbank day trip: dhow sailing with seafood lunch
A dhow and three islands instead of a hotel pool and a guidebook.
You sail on a traditional dhow to three islands: Kwale for a walk past coral formations and a fallen baobab; a secluded sandbank for snorkeling and a seafood barbecue; and Niamembe for shallow swimming or beach time. Snorkeling equipment, lunch with tropical fruit and drinks, and hotel pickup are all included. The full day runs from early morning to late afternoon.

The Experience
The dhow leaves early enough that you're past the city noise before most tourists finish breakfast. You'll sail across turquoise water toward Kwale Island, where an ancient baobab tree—fallen centuries ago but still rooted—stands on the beach like a monument to time. The guide walks you along the shoreline to spot hermit crabs and coral formations exposed at low tide, then you climb back aboard and head for the sandbank.
The sandbank appears suddenly: a strip of white sand in shallow water, nothing else around it for miles. You anchor the dhow and slip into water so clear you see your own feet. Snorkeling gear is already on board. The reef here holds parrotfish, grouper, and smaller species that dart between the coral—nothing staged, nothing fed by hand. After an hour or so of swimming, you climb back onto the sand to dry off while the crew sets up lunch: grilled fish, octopus, prawns, tropical fruit, cold sodas. You eat sitting on the beach with the Indian Ocean in front of you.
Niamembe Island comes last. It's thicker with vegetation than Kwale—actual forest, not just palms—and shallower water for swimming if you want to move again, or you can stay on the beach and let the sun do the work. The boat picks you up in the late afternoon. Transport back to your hotel is included, which means no negotiation at the dock, no waiting for a shared minibus, no wondering how you'll get back to town. You arrive dry, fed, and tired in the right way.
