Step-by-step itinerary

Boat trip with snorkeling and dolphins

  • Meet team at Nungwi Beach
  • Board motor boat from beach
  • Enjoy coastal views and spot dolphins
  • Arrive at Mnemba Atoll marine reserve
  • Snorkel among coral reefs and fish
  • Swim with wild dolphins if lucky
  • Relax on boat with fruits and water
  • Take photos above and below water

The Experience

The boat leaves Nungwi Beach, on Zanzibar's northern tip, and heads into open water where dolphins sometimes surface near the shore. You'll spot local fishermen and dhow boats along the way. The crew keeps watch for marine life as the coastline recedes behind you, and the ride itself is part of the draw — turquoise water, powdery sand fading into distance, the sense of moving into something wilder.

Mnemba Atoll sits just offshore and is a protected marine reserve. The water there is so clear you can see the coral gardens below before you slip in. Parrotfish, clownfish and angelfish move through the reefs in schools. If dolphins are in the area, the crew will position the boat so you can swim with them — it's not guaranteed, but it's why people book this trip. Between snorkeling sessions the boat stays anchored in calm, warm water, and the crew brings out fresh tropical fruit and cold water so you can rest and float.

A live guide speaks English or French and handles the logistics — when to enter the water, where the best coral is, how to move around the reef without disturbing it. Snorkeling equipment is provided, and the boat is air-conditioned for the ride back. Beginners and experienced snorkelers both work here because the water is shallow enough to stand in and the visibility is excellent. The whole day is built around the water and what lives in it, not around a schedule of stops.

Top questions

Can I swim with the dolphins, or is it just a chance to see them?

Swimming with wild dolphins depends on whether they're in the area that day — the crew actively searches for them during the boat ride, and if they're spotted, you'll get in the water to swim alongside them. It's not guaranteed, but it's a real possibility on most trips.

What's Mnemba Atoll actually like underwater?

Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine reserve with vibrant coral gardens, clear warm water and abundant tropical fish including parrotfish, clownfish and angelfish. Visibility is excellent and the water is calm, so you can see the reef structure and move through it comfortably whether you're a beginner or experienced.

How long do I spend actually snorkeling versus traveling?

The trip runs 4 to 5 hours total. Most of that time is spent at Mnemba Atoll snorkeling and resting on the boat between sessions; the boat ride from Nungwi Beach to the atoll is scenic but shorter than the time in the water.

Do I need my own snorkeling gear, or is it provided?

Snorkeling equipment is included — mask, fins and snorkel are provided by the crew, so you don't need to bring your own or rent separately.

Where does the boat pick me up, and how do I get to Nungwi Beach?

The boat departs from Nungwi Beach on Zanzibar's northern tip. Pickup is included, and an air-conditioned vehicle will collect you from your hotel and bring you to the beach in time for departure.

Is this trip safe for someone who's never snorkeled before?

Yes — the trip is designed for all skill levels from beginners to experienced snorkelers. The water at Mnemba is shallow and calm with excellent visibility, and a professional crew is on hand throughout to keep things safe and help you get comfortable in the water.
