Dolphins at dawn, then corals most visitors never reach

Swim with dolphins near Nungwi beach on Zanzibar's north coast, then cruise northwest to Tumbatu Island for snorkeling among well-preserved corals and marine life. The tour includes boat transport, snorkeling equipment, a local guide and hotel pickup; the shallow, clear water and small group size mean you see the seafloor and the animals without the crowds of the main reef sites.

Step-by-step itinerary

Dolphin swim and Tumbatu snorkeling

  • Swim with dolphins near Nungwi beach
  • Cruise to Tumbatu island
  • Snorkel near Tumbatu island corals

The Experience

The morning starts at Nungwi beach on Zanzibar's northern tip, where you enter the water to swim alongside dolphins in their natural habitat. After that encounter, the boat heads northwest toward Tumbatu Island, a smaller isle known for corals that have stayed largely untouched because marine conservationists here protect them carefully. The visibility stays good throughout—the water clarity lets you see down to the seabed and spot the marine species scattered among the coral formations.

Snorkeling happens near Tumbatu itself, where the corals are denser and more varied than the heavily visited reef sites elsewhere on the island. You wear provided snorkeling gear and move at your own pace in the water; the guide stays with the group and points out what to look for. The whole outing runs three to four hours from pickup to return, so it fits into a morning or early afternoon without eating the rest of your day.

Hotel pickup is included, and the guide speaks English, Spanish or French. Bring a moderate level of fitness for water entry and time in the boat; the tour is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns, pregnancy or a tendency toward seasickness.

Top questions

What's the water like for snorkeling near Tumbatu Island?

Tumbatu Island snorkeling happens in clear, shallow water where you can see the seafloor and the corals scattered across it. The visibility is good enough to spot marine species among the coral formations, and the water stays calm in the protected area where the boat anchors.

Do I get to see dolphins every time on this tour?

The tour includes swimming with dolphins near Nungwi beach at the start of the day. Dolphins are wild animals, so sightings depend on their presence in the area on the day you go, but the operator has built the tour around this part of the coast where they are regularly found.

How long does the whole tour take?

The tour runs three to four hours from hotel pickup to return, including the dolphin swim, the boat ride to Tumbatu, and the snorkeling time near the island.

What snorkeling gear do I need to bring?

Snorkeling equipment is provided as part of the tour, so you don't need to bring your own mask, fins or snorkel. Bring a towel, sunscreen and a rash guard or light shirt if you prefer extra sun protection in the water.

Is this tour good for someone who has never snorkeled before?

Yes, if you have a moderate level of physical fitness and are comfortable in the water. The guide is with the group, the water is shallow and clear, and the pace is relaxed. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, pregnancy or seasickness.
