Snorkeling in Zanzibar: Dolphins, Mnemba Reef & Sandbank
Spot pods of dolphins, then drop into a reef teeming with rays and groupers
Snorkel three sites around Zanzibar—a dolphin encounter, Mnemba Island reef, and a sandbank—aboard a private motorboat with a professional guide, snorkeling gear, fresh fruit, and hotel transfers included. The reef is accessible only at low tide, and dolphins appear in 95% of trips. All marine fees are pre-paid.
The Experience
The motorboat leaves your hotel with shade and safety gear already aboard. A professional English-speaking guide and local boat captain navigate you northeast toward the dolphin grounds—Kombe, Tangini, West Garden, or Kichwani—where pods of 10 to 30 bottlenose dolphins roam. These grey dolphins, two to four meters long with curved mouths that look like permanent smiles, are wild animals but show up in 95% of trips. The early timing keeps the water less crowded with other boats, so the encounter feels less like a queue.
After the dolphins, you head to Mnemba Island reef. The water shifts from open sea to a dense garden of marine life: Angel Fish, Blue Spotted Rays, Black Snappers, Groupers, Red Tooth Triggers, Flounder, Octopuses, Leaf Fish, Scorpion Fish, Stone Fish, Frog Fish, and schools of Trevallies. Your snorkeling gear is premium—clean mask, snorkel and fins—and the guide stays in the water with you. Mnemba was ranked the #1 Best Beach Destination in Africa by Tripsavvy, though each reef has its own character.
The final stop is the Sandbank near Mnemba, accessible only at low tide. The water here is exceptionally clear and shallow, like a natural pool with white sand beneath. You can wade, float, or simply sit in the shallows with a glass of fresh tropical fruit and bottled water. The whole outing runs three hours. Hotel transfers are round-trip and air-conditioned; all government marine conservation fees are pre-paid so nothing is due at the beach.
