The experience

What makes Mnemba Island different from other snorkeling spots around Zanzibar? The reef sits in a conservation area, which means the fish populations stay dense and the dolphins pass through regularly enough that sightings are common rather than lucky. You get picked up from your hotel, driven to the boat launch, and spend the morning and early afternoon in the water, not watching from a boat, but actually in it with the gear on, moving through the reef at your own pace while the guide stays close and points out what you're swimming past.

The underwater life here runs to starfish, moorish idols and snappers in schools, but the draw most people come for is the green turtles and the dolphins. Turtles graze on the seagrass in shallow water. Dolphins hunt the deeper channels. Both show up on most days, though neither is guaranteed, the ocean decides. You'll have time to move between the shallow reef and deeper water depending on what the guide spots and what you want to chase. Snorkeling equipment is provided, so you only bring yourself and a willingness to be in the water for stretches of the morning.

Around midday the boat pulls back to the beach and a barbecue is set up: fresh seafood, grilled and still hot, with tropical fruit and water. You eat on the sand with the island behind you and the reef in front. After lunch there's usually another hour or two in the water before the ride back to your hotel. The whole day is six hours door to door.
