Snorkel a reef big enough to avoid crowds, then watch for dolphins from the water

A full-day private snorkeling trip from Zanzibar to Mnemba Island and the Mnemba Atoll Marine Reserve, with hotel pickup, a guide, and all equipment included. You snorkel the coral reef for tropical fish, turtles and barracuda, then take a separate dolphin-watching cruise where pods appear in their natural habitat—though sightings are never guaranteed. The boat is yours alone, so the reef never feels crowded even on busy days.

Step-by-step itinerary

Dolphin watching and snorkeling tour

  • Pickup at hotel in Unguja
  • Boat ride to Mnemba Island
  • Watch for dolphins from boat
  • Snorkel at Mnemba Atoll coral reef
  • Snack stop on sandbank with fresh fruit
  • Return to shore on Unguja
  • See local fishermen selling catch
  • Transfer back to accommodation

The Experience

The day starts with pickup at your hotel on Unguja, then a private boat ride toward Mnemba Island. Depending on conditions, you reach the coral reef in up to 45 minutes. Once there, the reef is large enough that you won't feel crowded even when other boats are around—you have space to move, explore and linger on the sections that hold your attention. You'll see yellow snapper, barracuda, turtles and other marine life moving through the water. All snorkeling equipment is provided, and your guide is there to point out what's worth watching for.

After snorkeling, you stop on a sandbank to rest and eat. Your captain puts together a fresh fruit platter and small bites—a break under the sun before heading back. Later, you board a specially designed viewing boat for a separate dolphin-watching cruise through the waters around Mnemba Island. This is when you look for dolphin pods in their natural habitat. Sightings are not guaranteed—your guide will do their best to position the boat where dolphins are comfortable, so you might see them up close or from a distance, but the water is their home and they decide whether to appear. The return journey takes you past local fishermen selling their day's catches before you're transferred back to your accommodation.

The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and two additional languages. Children from age 1 are welcome, and the service is wheelchair accessible throughout—all areas, surfaces and transportation options accommodate wheelchairs. The trip is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, though it suits all other fitness levels.
