Bottlenose and spinner dolphins in the open water, reef fish below.

Snorkel Mnemba Reef from Nungwi with a local guide, mask, fins and all fees included. You'll watch bottlenose and spinner dolphins in their natural habitat as you sail over the Indian Ocean, then dive into the reef to see angel fish, red tooth triggers, octopuses and stone fish among the coral. The activity runs four hours and includes hotel pickup from Nungwi or Kendwa, plus seasonal fruit.

The Experience

You get picked up from your Nungwi or Kendwa hotel and head out on the water to find dolphins. The guide watches for them as you sail — bottlenose and spinner dolphins move through these waters, and the boat slows when they appear so you can watch them swim in their natural state. It's not a guarantee, but sightings are common on this route.

Once the dolphins move on or you've had your time watching them, the boat takes you to Mnemba Reef. The water here is clear enough to see the coral structure and the fish living in it. You'll spot angel fish, red tooth triggers, octopuses, stone fish and frogfish moving through the reef. The guide provides a mask and fins; you bring nothing but yourself and a willingness to be in the water for a couple of hours.

The whole activity is four hours from pickup to return. Seasonal fruit comes with it. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and one additional language, so communication is straightforward. This is a public activity, so you'll share the boat with other snorkelers, though the group size stays manageable.
