The experience

The morning starts at 7:30 AM when you board a speedboat at Nungwi and head into the turquoise water to search for wild dolphins in their natural habitat. If conditions allow, you swim alongside them. A rare moment that does not happen on every departure. The boat then takes you to Mnemba Atoll, a marine reserve where the coral gardens sit shallow enough to snorkel and dense enough that schools of tropical fish move through them in visible patterns. Between water time, you stay on board with fresh pineapple, mango, watermelon and bottled water.

Snorkeling gear and flippers are provided, so you arrive with nothing but a swimsuit. The guide is a local who speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of two other languages, and the captain knows the water and the tides. The Menai fee (the reserve entrance) is included in the price. You're back on the mainland by 12:00 PM, which leaves the afternoon open for the rest of your day in Zanzibar.
