Sail to Mnemba and snorkel the reef on your own terms

A full-day private Dhow sailing trip from Kendwa beach to Mnemba sandbank in Zanzibar, with snorkeling at a nearby reef, fresh-cooked seafood lunch on board, and a high chance of spotting dolphins in their natural habitat. The boat is traditional East African sailing vessel, the guide speaks English, and all snorkeling gear, drinks and meals are included. Mnemba Marine Park access fees are separate.

9h

Step-by-step itinerary

Full-day Dhow sail and snorkel

  • Start from Kendwa beach
  • Sail along north coast of Zanzibar
  • Watch for dolphins en route
  • Anchor near reef for snorkeling
  • Enjoy fresh lunch on board
  • Stop at Mnemba sandbank for lounging
  • Return to Kendwa beach by afternoon
  • Watch sunset with snacks and drinks

The Experience

The sail leaves Kendwa beach in the morning and follows the north coast of Zanzibar toward Mnemba, a neighboring island known for clear water and reef life. The route itself is part of the day—you see the island from the ocean side, which is how most visitors never experience it. The Dhow is a traditional sailing boat built for these waters, and the crew is Tanzanian and trained to move at the pace of the sea rather than a schedule. Dolphins live in the area; the operator does not guarantee them but says the probability is high, and the rule on board is to watch without chasing.

Before lunch, you anchor near the reef and snorkel with your own equipment—mask, fins and snorkel provided. The water is shallow enough to see the bottom and deep enough to hold reef fish and coral. After you come back on board, the crew cooks a fresh seafood barbecue lunch while you rest or float. The meal accounts for dietary restrictions if you mention them when booking. Soft drinks, fresh coconut, beer and wine come with the day; other alcoholic drinks can be added for a fee.

In the afternoon, the boat moves to the Mnemba sandbank—a strip of sand that appears and disappears with the tide—where you can wade, photograph, or simply sit. The return to Kendwa happens in time for sunset, with snacks and fresh fruit on board as the light changes. The whole day runs nine hours from start to finish.

Operated by Zanzibar Dhow

Is this one for you?Book this trip if you want to snorkel without renting gear separately or organizing a boat yourself—the Dhow, the crew, the meals and the route are all arranged, so you show up at Kendwa and the day unfolds on the water. The private boat means your group sets the pace and the stops, and the traditional sailing style is slower and quieter than a motorized tour, which is what makes spotting dolphins and watching the island from offshore feel less rushed.

Top questions

What is Mnemba and what will I see when I snorkel there?

Mnemba is a small island off the north coast of Zanzibar, surrounded by a reef in shallow, clear water. When you snorkel at the nearby reef, you'll see coral formations and reef fish in water you can see through to the bottom. The sandbank itself is a natural formation of sand that shifts with the tide, popular for wading and photographs.

Is the snorkeling equipment included, or do I need to bring my own?

Snorkeling gear—mask, fins and snorkel—is provided on the boat. You don't need to bring your own or rent it separately.

Will I definitely see dolphins on this trip?

Dolphins live in the waters around Mnemba and are spotted frequently on this route, but the operator cannot guarantee them on any given day. The crew watches respectfully without chasing, so sightings depend on where the dolphins are when you sail.

What's included in the lunch, and can you handle dietary restrictions?

Lunch is a fresh seafood barbecue cooked on board. If you have dietary restrictions—vegetarian, allergies, religious requirements—mention them when you book and the crew will prepare an alternative.

How long is the full day, and what time do we return to Kendwa?

The trip runs nine hours total, leaving Kendwa in the morning and returning in the afternoon in time for sunset. The exact return time depends on wind and sea conditions, but the crew plans to have you back before the light fades.

Do I need to pay anything extra for Mnemba Marine Park, or is it included?

Access to the special area at Mnemba Marine Park is not included in the tour price and is paid separately if you choose to enter that zone. Snorkeling at the nearby reef is part of the included itinerary.
