The Experience

The boat leaves from a beach near Matemwe, a short ride from Zanzibar's main lodging areas. Once you're on the water heading toward Mnemba Atoll, the guide briefs you on what to expect and how to move through the reserve without disturbing the marine life. The moment you put on your snorkel gear and look down, the underwater landscape opens up—stingrays glide across sandy patches, lionfish hover near the reef structure, moray eels tuck into crevices, and turtles move through the shallows.
