The experience

The day starts at a coffee farm where you learn how the Chagga people grow, harvest and process beans, then roast and brew a fresh cup yourself. After tasting what you've made, you hike for about 30 minutes through tropical rainforest and the shambas: banana and avocado farms that blanket the hills and valleys. On clear days, views of Kibo and Moshi town open up during the walk. The terrain is steep enough that hiking boots matter.

Materuni Waterfall drops 150 meters at the base of Kilimanjaro, and the hike ends where you can swim in its cold water. Bring swimwear. The experience includes singing and dancing the Kilimanjaro song "Jambo Bwana" and "Hakuna Matata" as part of the coffee preparation, a moment woven into the farm visit itself rather than performed separately.
