The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup and a drive to Materuni village, where the actual walking begins. The trek to the waterfall is short but steep. Your guide will set the pace, and the path leads through forest to where water drops into a pool you can swim in. After cooling off, you walk to a nearby coffee plantation where the guide shows you how Chagga farmers grow, harvest and process coffee by hand. You'll roast green beans over a fire, grind them, and brew a pot to drink on the spot, tasting the difference between what you made and what the plantation sells.
Once you've finished at the plantation, you'll eat a traditional Chagga meal (cooked food, not a packed lunch), before heading to Chemka, also called Kikuletwa Hotsprings. This is a natural hot spring with a deep pool where you can swim for as long as you want before the drive back to Moshi. The whole day runs 10 hours from pickup to drop-off.
