The Experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel in Moshi and a tuk-tuk or car ride up to Materuni village. Once there, you walk through a local coffee plantation and learn how Arabica coffee is grown, harvested and processed on these Kilimanjaro slopes. You'll pound the beans to remove their shells, roast them over a fire, grind them by hand, and brew a cup of coffee you've made yourself — then drink it while standing in the plantation.

After coffee, the guide leads a 45-minute hike to Materuni Waterfall, Mt. Kilimanjaro's largest at 90 meters tall. The path is muddy and uneven, so the shoes you wear matter. The waterfall sits at the end of a forested trail, and you have the option to swim in the pool below it before heading back down to the village.

Back in Materuni, a locally prepared Chagga lunch waits for you — the traditional meal of the people who live on Kilimanjaro's slopes. You can also try freshly brewed banana beer if you want to (that's an extra cost). The tuk-tuk or car then returns you to Moshi and drops you wherever you're staying. The whole day runs about five hours from pickup to drop-off.
