The experience
Materuni sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in a green valley where the Chagga people farm coffee and bananas. Your driver picks you up after breakfast and takes you to the village, where a local guide meets you at the registration office. The walk to the waterfalls takes 45 minutes over light terrain. On the way your guide points out coffee trees, banana plants and explains the history of the village and the water system. From the top of the village you get views across to Moshi town, Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
After the waterfall hike, you eat lunch: either a packed meal from town or a hot meal prepared by a local cook. Then comes the coffee class: you learn how farmers process coffee from the raw bean to the cup, using the methods practiced in Materuni. The guide walks you through each step and you roast your own batch. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.
Your guide returns you to your Moshi hotel in the late afternoon, ending the tour. Children from age 5 are welcome, though the hike and the day's pace suit travelers with at least moderate fitness.
